Scene 1: A village hall

Set up for a Committee meeting.

The three Committee members wander into the village hall and sit behind the table. No one else is there.

Chairman:

"It’s ominously quiet. I hope this Science Fiction Club meeting livens up soon."

[Effect]

Outside the sound of a motorbike roars past and just as it fades away, it changes note to a high-pitched whine.

Secretary:

Asks with a puzzled look.

"What’s happened to that?"

Chairman:

"Never mind. It’s gone now."

Treasurer:

Pulls a great file bulging with papers from his briefcase.

"We’ll have to raise the subscriptions again."

[Effect]

Before the others could reply, a deafening roar fills the room and vanishes in a hiss.

Chairman:

"By God! That’s an angry noise."

Secretary:

Reading some old minutes,

"Sounds like a space ship, if you ask me."

All:

Laugh

Secretary:

"By the way, I don’t think any other candidates have been proposed for election to the committee, so it might be quickest if we ask to be re-elected en-block."

[Effect]

A terrific "space" noise comes from somewhere. Shaking.

Chairman:

"Take a look at that. We can’t have that din throughout the meeting."

Secretary:

Goes to see.

"There’s nothing here".

Chairman:

"There must be."

All

Go to look but find nothing.

Other member:

Arrives and says

"Sorry I’m late. Have I missed anything?"

Chairman:

"No. We are just starting."

[Effect]

Every time someone speaks, the noise drowns them out.

Other member:

"What did you say?"

[Effect]

Noise

Chairman:

Shouting

"It’s the spaceman again".

[Effect]

Noise

Secretary:

Shouting "What’s he want?

A place on the Committee?

[Effect]

Different "happy" Noise

Chairman:

"No way."

[Effect]

Noise. Door opens and closes.

Secretary:

"Clear Off. We don’t want a spaceman on the Committee."
